VISAKHAPATNAM: The air intelligence unit of the customs department arrested P Anil Kumar, travelling from Dubai, for smuggling gold biscuits worth over Rs 35 lakh here at Visakhapatnam Airport. The biscuits weigh around 1,115 gm.
According to commissioner of customs (Vizag airport) C Rajendiran, Anil Kumar arrived from Dubai on an Air India flight (AI 952) on Wednesday evening.
The customs sleuths nabbed him while he was trying to walk out through the green channel, which is meant for passengers travelling without any dutiable goods.
On thorough examination of his baggage, 10 gold biscuits weighing around 10 tolas each were recovered from a special cavity that was created inside the transformer of a battery charger carried by the passenger in his baggage.
Meanwhile, in another case, on April 22, customs officials had detected two gold biscuits concealed in the soles of the shoes of a passenger coming from Dubai on April 22.
The case is under investigation.
