If sources are to be believed, Andhra Pradesh government is proposing to set up new domestic airports at Nellore, Vijayanagaram, Ongole and Anantapur. There is also proposal for a civilian airport near Visakhapatnam. Existing airports at Gannavaram and Rajahmundry will also be expanded.
Vijayawada: According to reliable sources, Andhra Pradesh government has taken decision to set up domestic airports in Nellore, Vijayanagaram, Ongole and Anantapur districts. Andhra Pradesh has to now concentrate on setting up new airports because of bifurcation. The government is confident that they can set up new airports as the aviation minister in central government is Ashok Gajapati Raju who is from Andhra Pradesh. The government is ready with proposals as there are chances that approval for setting up new airports will come fast.
In Andhra Pradesh, there are airports at Tirupati, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada and the state government has proposal to upgrade these airports as international airports. Gannavaram and Rajahmundry airports will also be expanded. According information, there are some problems for state government to utilize Visakhapatnam airport. Navy higher authorities are objecting for foreign aero planes to come to Visakhapatnam due to security reasons. Thus the state government wants to build a new international airport away from Visakhapatnam.
After building the new international airport near Visakhapatnam, the old airport will be handed over to Navy. Central minister also had issued orders to look for suitable land to set up international airport near Visakhapatnam to district collectors, it is informed by reliable sources. Five thousand acres of land is required for setting up new international airport.
A couple of days ago, Finance minister of AP, Yanamala Ramakrishnudu informed that a new airport will come up between Visakhapatnam and Kakinada.
Vizag, Ongole, Anantapur and Vijayanagaram are major cities in Andhra Pradesh and each has its own identity. Visakhapatnam has a port and public private industries. It is also the headquarter to Eastern Naval command. The airport at Vizag is presently under the command of Navy. Thus a civilian international airport is proposed and it is well connected to all parts of the country. Vizag and Ongole are contenders for capital city of residual Andhra Pradesh along with Vijayawada.
